Cannabidiol or CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound with enormous therapeutic potential.
Cannabinoids are chemicals that trigger the cannabinoid receptor system in the body. In addition to cannabinoids produced by the plant, there are endogenous cannabinoids that
occur naturally in the body, as well as synthetic cannabinoids created by pharmaceutical researchers.
CBD has been shown to have strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasm, anti-convulsant, anti-psychotic, anti-tumoral, and neuro-protective properties. CBD directly activates serotonin
receptors, causing an anti-depressant effect, as well.
Research at Universities throughout Israel and the UK supports further studies that have shown that CBD could be effective in the treatment of several common symptoms. For example, chronic pain from cancer, anxiety , diabetes, epilepsy in children, rheumatoid arthritis, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Veterans, sleep disorders, eating disorders, addictions such as alcohol and nicotine , cardiovascular improvement, antibiotic·resistant infections, and neurodegenerative disorders. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine recently studied effects of Cannabis treatment for animals (see http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vmth/index.cfm ).
Academic research centers in the United States, including The University of New Mexico Psychology Department, and elsewhere are currently studying the effects of CBD and THC on these and other health problems.
